Hybrid cars can fly? Well, yes and no. Flying in the sense that they appear to be flying off the local car lots faster than ice can melt in the Arizona sun.

The current projected wait at some dealerships for the ever popular Toyota Prius and the Honda civic hybrid can up to two months. And the worst part is that if you thinking drive over the hill to where the hybrid grass may be a little greener you can probably expect to pay well above sticker price to get the cars with best gas mileage.

On average, the order process is taking anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks and if you aren’t to picky on color and bells and whistles you can get one a little quicker.

One thing you want to pay particular attention to is sticker price vs actual savings at the pump. If your sole purpose in getting that hybrid car is saving some cash then take the time to figure out how long the payback is going to take you.

For instance comparing the Civic EX and a Civic hybrid it could realistically take you over 9 years to make up the $3100 difference in price. Of course it all depends on the current cost of fuel but unless gas prices go off the chart…you may well never re-coup the cost depending on how long you own the vehicle.

This advice also bodes well no matter what kind of vehicle you own when comparing cost of the new hybrid car with how much you will actually save over the long haul. You may want to consider converting the car you currently own.

Of course, there are many other ways of making your vehicle the car with the best gas mileage on the highway as pointed out in many articles on this site but the fact is that higher gas prices are here to stay.

History is always the best teacher and looking at fuel prices from a historical fact concluded that the price at the pump will only continue to rise.

Bottom line? Saving gas, saving money and saving the planet is all a good thing. Going hybrid may be right for you or you may want to consider converting your current vehicle into your own personal hybrid car at a fraction of the cost of a new one…and the waiting time? Zero.

Improve my gas mileage! If you listen closely, you can hear that demand echo through time since the start of the industrial age. Nearly 100 years have gone by trying to figure out the best way to do it.

Many gas mileage devices have been developed over the last 75 years which has nearly doubled the mileage cars now get but progress has been slow.

The fix? The Auto X Prize competition has officially launched in March and is sponsored by the Progressive auto insurance company. The goal? The first 100mgp car and you can still get in.

Up for grabs is a Whopping $10 million dollar prize and the first individual or group of individuals who can demonstrate 100mgp in a cross-country race, wins the cash.

Up for the challenge? The competition races begin sometime in 2009 so if you think you can somehow “improve my gas mileage” it’s time to quit thinking and get building!

This brings us to the questions as to whether you think you have what it is going to take, what are the exact rules to get into this game and what are the ultimate goals.

To start with, the goals are fairly simple. We need to get off our dependence on foriegn oil. We need cars that are totally efficient and we need them to be environmentally responsible. Bottom line? Improve my gas mileage!

The winning car will demonstrate an easy concept and something that is simple to understand. Something along the line of a car that you and I could actually work on. Is that even possible now days?

The benefits of this car need to be global in definition. So, on those terms, anyone from anywhere can compete in this race. It doesn’t matter where you reside, bring your brains!

The winning car must also be a car that everyone can purchase. Concept cars or idea cars are not allowed. It’s got to be ready for production.

Some of the other rules are those such as only fair and non partisan contestants are allowed. If you are asking yourself what that is…you are pretty safe to enter. Also, fuel effiency, performance, emission, safety and other issues need to be addressed.

Don’t get hung up on the technicals. If you can build something that you can enter and it is capable of being manufactured then all shade tree mechanics world wide need to get busy!

There are huge implication for this type of contest not only for the winner but also for the entire world as well!

Are you thinking how life could change for you and the world in general as this technology reaches into other industries as well. Things would change on a global scale.

There’s lots more information about this on the net if you know where to start searching so get those fingers and eyeballs working. You never know. Maybe you will be the one to give us all the gas mileage improvement we all really need.
