Hybrid cars aren’t just for the Prius anymore! The wildly propular Prius frenzy has finally started to catch the attention of auto makers around the world who are rapidly developing the cars with best gas mileage. Nothing like $4 dollar a gallon gas to wake the flippin auto industry up huh? Could it be that all those mid east oil mongers have finally bit the hand that feeds them once to many times? God, I hope so!

Anyway, word has surfaced just today that the Lotus, that awesomely stylish British sports car is now in the process of putting that all familiar roar of distinction under a new brand of eco-friendly that will actually make it a safer bet for pedestrians than the near silent runners coming off more traditional assembly lines.

Hahaha…sure sounds like a winning explanation to me! Lotus making a quiet car? COME ON! It wouldn’t be a Lotus if it didn’t sound like one right even if it were one of the cars with best gas mileage?

At any rate, Lotus said its “safe and sound hybrid technology” simulates the traditional grunt of a combustion engine, making it “instantly recognisable that the vehicle is in motion”. Sweet! I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Here’s the clincher though. The sound you hear coming from that new hybrid car engine? Artificial…of course! Seems that the engine noise you hear when starting that car is produced by a waterproof loudspeaker placed somewhere around the radiator….What? Lord say it isn’t so!!!

Well, I guess it is better for those of us who walk the streets for our health and fido’s exercise routine…I mean after all…a Lotus hybrid…Not being sure of who is behind the wheel I guess being able to hear it coming is not a bad idea after all!

Hybrid cars can fly? Well, yes and no. Flying in the sense that they appear to be flying off the local car lots faster than ice can melt in the Arizona sun.

The current projected wait at some dealerships for the ever popular Toyota Prius and the Honda civic hybrid can up to two months. And the worst part is that if you thinking drive over the hill to where the hybrid grass may be a little greener you can probably expect to pay well above sticker price to get the cars with best gas mileage.

On average, the order process is taking anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks and if you aren’t to picky on color and bells and whistles you can get one a little quicker.

One thing you want to pay particular attention to is sticker price vs actual savings at the pump. If your sole purpose in getting that hybrid car is saving some cash then take the time to figure out how long the payback is going to take you.

For instance comparing the Civic EX and a Civic hybrid it could realistically take you over 9 years to make up the $3100 difference in price. Of course it all depends on the current cost of fuel but unless gas prices go off the chart…you may well never re-coup the cost depending on how long you own the vehicle.

This advice also bodes well no matter what kind of vehicle you own when comparing cost of the new hybrid car with how much you will actually save over the long haul. You may want to consider converting the car you currently own.

Of course, there are many other ways of making your vehicle the car with the best gas mileage on the highway as pointed out in many articles on this site but the fact is that higher gas prices are here to stay.

History is always the best teacher and looking at fuel prices from a historical fact concluded that the price at the pump will only continue to rise.

Bottom line? Saving gas, saving money and saving the planet is all a good thing. Going hybrid may be right for you or you may want to consider converting your current vehicle into your own personal hybrid car at a fraction of the cost of a new one…and the waiting time? Zero.
